5 tips and trick for a more sustainable household:

Nowadays the world battles many issues including pollution. Each day humans create so much waste without noticing the damage we cause on our home. You may think to yourself about different ways that you might end up being more sustainable in order to help your future to be more green. This not only helps you but also helps everyone around you whether you know them or not.


Below We’ve compiled 5 tips that are fairly easy to achieve in order to allow your household to become more sustainable. These tips and tricks are easy enough to be applied and will allow you to adjust your lifestyle without creating a burden for you or your wallet.

1. Creating a compost bin


Eating out is a treat we all enjoy from time to time. Eating at home however is more sustainable and economic. When you eat at home you have the option of cooking however you like with whatever ingredients you like. When you are done cooking instead of throwing the food scraps you end up with after all of that glorious preparation in the trash, you can create a small compost pile at one corner of your garden or balcony. It is very easy to start and to maintain.


All you need is a little container with a lid and some soil. You can throw any food scraps, tea bags, and paper towels into it. once thrown into soil you can leave it be and the bugs and critters that call the soil home will do their daily routine and decompose whatever is inside the compost bin. Once the decomposition is complete you can actually use the soil you end up with to grow you own vegetables and fruits at home since the soil becomes very nutritious.


2. Avoid plastic


We tend to go to the grocery store every now and then depending how many people live in your household. Anything in a grocery store has some sort of plastic packaging nevertheless the type of item you are purchasing. The plastic that is used for wrappers is usually recyclable but is very light weight and tends to fly away when it ends up in landfills. When it flies away it ends up in water or soil causing pollution of many kinds.


In order to avoid this issue, you can use your own reusable containers and avoid getting plastic bags at the register. You can purchase a shopping bag that can be reused many times and is washable so doesn’t look nasty after a few trips to the snack aisle.


3. Use reusable containers


Another way of preventing waste alongside avoiding plastic is to use reusable containers whenever possible. We all know how fun it is to go to the supermarket and walk through the snack aisle and want to buy every single chocolate bar. Even though it is super fun it also makes us create a large amount of trash. To prevent this, we can start using reusable containers.



This may make you think how on earth will you use reusable containers at a grocery store where everything comes prepackaged. In order to help your environment and your local community while doing so you can actually shop at bulk stores and your local farmers markets.


4. Bulk stores allow you to purchase whatever quantity you want from a specific item. The options are limitless when it comes to shopping there. The products range from basic grocery like lentils and flour all the way to cleaning supplies that either come in a bucket and a scoop or more simply a tap. You are free to bring whichever type of container you like as long as it clean and okay to be weighed. Before you start your shopping, a worker in the store weighs your container for you and writes it on the lid so that it can be subtracted from the total weight while you are paying.


You can also purchase containers from the store themselves if you don’t have any reusable containers or you ended forgetting yours that specific day. You can also visit your local farmers market and again end up going packaging free and avoiding plastic.


By shopping at your local farmers market, you end supporting farmers and their small businesses. You also end up getting allowed to choose and see the produce that is being sold. When you got to a farmers market the variety of items is again very larger just like bulk stores. You can find everything from fruits, vegetables, jams, fish, cheese, pastries, and many more.


5.Take advantage of natural light / choose energy efficient items


We all love a well illuminated house. The sunlight coming through your windows and making you soak in that vitamin D all throughout the day. It is just refreshing and replenishing. Sunlight is also very sustainable. It is an energy source that doesn’t actually harm the environment since it is part of the environment itself so you should take advantage of it whilst you can as much as you can. During the day keeping your windows unobstructed and allowing all the sunlight you can into your house is the best thing you can do. Not only is sunlight sustainable but it also has great health benefits as well.


If you live in an area that doesn’t have as much sunlight and you need the support of a light bulb to be illuminated, make sure to use energy efficient ones in order to save up and be as sustainable as possible for not only your future but also the future of everyone else’s.
